The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a key EU funding instrument to promote growth, jobs, and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment at European level. CEF Digital, the digital arm of CEF, aims at creating Digital Service Infrastructures (DSIs) which bring support to the development of interoperable Digital Services improving the daily life of European citizens and the performance of businesses which can be replicated from one European country to another and work cross-border. A budget of 870 million is earmarked for trans-European digital services for 2014-2020.
These DSIs would effectively help to materialize a Digital Single Market. They are based on reusable components, referred to as CEF Building Blocks, which provide basic capabilities that can be reused in any project to facilitate the delivery of digital public services across borders and sectors.
CEF Building Blocks bring support to:
- Interoperability with the other CEF Building Blocks.
- Compliance with the regulations.
- Endorsement at public level.
- Recommended for cross-border solutions.
In 2018, FIWARE Context Broker became one of the CEF Building Blocks providing a standard mean for public administrations of EU member states (including Smart Cities) as well as businesses to share data in right time.
