We are excited to announce that the City of Etteln (Germany), a FIWARE city, has won the prestigious IEEE Smart Cities Contest! Competing against cities from around the world, Etteln emerged as the winner, with Hong Kong securing second place and two cities from India finishing in third and fourth places, respectively. The contest was organized by IEEE, the world’s largest association for electrical and computer engineering, which has approximately 400,000 members. The award ceremony took place in Thailand.
One notable project in Etteln is the DiDoZ project, which aims to eliminate data silos by unifying all available village data on the FIWARE framework, making it easily accessible. As a result of this integration, citizens can access up-to-date information through a dashboard and a 3D map. Alongside the Waterverse project, which utilizes FIWARE to develop a flood warning system, DiDoZ is enhancing safety and transparency within the community.
Etteln is also home to several other innovative FIWARE projects that highlight the region’s pioneering spirit. For instance, the Didymos-XR project enhances the concept of a digital twin by incorporating extended reality (XR). Additionally, the NeMo.bil project is set to introduce an autonomous shuttle as part of a digital mobility solution. In line with these forward-thinking initiatives, Etteln also offers a village app, a digital ride-sharing bench, the “Ettcar” electric vehicle, and the “Ettcargo” e-cargo bike, all of which provide modern, connected mobility options.
The success at the IEEE Smart Cities Contest underscores Etteln’s pioneering role in the smart city domain and demonstrates how FIWARE technology helps municipalities develop innovative solutions.
