FIWARE goes global! Four FIWARE teams will participate to the Global City Team Challenge Festival to be held in Washington DC (USA), 1-2 June 2015

Thanks to the first steps moved by FIWARE during the US Ignite Applications Summit in March 2015 and the various presentations and discussions that happened within this occasion, we are pleased to announce that four FIWARE-based deployed applications in smart cities will participate in the Global City Teams Challenge (https://www.us-ignite.org/globalcityteams/), GCTC, on 1-2 June 2015. These activities are promoted and supported by the FIWARE Mundus programme (https://www.fiware.org/mundus/), which aims to establish close connections and collaboration links with innovators worldwide to ensure broad adoption and uptake of FIWARE both in Europe and internationally.

The GCTC exhibition will be held in the prestigious National Building Museum in the heart of the Washington D.C. old downtown district. Keynotes from the US Secretary of Transportation, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Netherlands Minister of Foreign Affairs, and participation by mayors from around the world all coming together to showcase their Smart City / IoT projects and initiatives, are announced. The King and Queen from the Kingdom of the Netherlands are also expected to attend. The event features a large exhibition with more than 60 teams presenting and demonstrating smart city applications. Exhibitors include many American cities as well as international cities including Bandung, Indonesia; Coruna, Spain; Tel Aviv, Israel; and The Hague, Netherlands.

The FIWARE delegation will be composed of about 10 people. Representatives from the FIWARE Mundus programme, from the City of Valencia, from the SpeedUpEurope FIWARE accelerator and three of their teams, as well as representatives from the European Commission, will attend. The plan is to show and demonstrate smart cities applications developed using FIWARE as follows:

  • A team from the “Binee” SpeedUpEurope project, including the project coordinator and a representative from Guatemala City, will demonstrate their smart bin and app for rewarding and improving recycling in the cities.
  • A team from the City of Valencia and from Telefonica will present several applications deployed in Valencia, Spain, including the “App Valencia” City mobile application, the Valencia eGovernment Integrated Platform, the Valencia Smart City Platform, and the Valencia Transparency & Open Data Portal.
  • A team from the “Tripstories” SpeedUpEurope project, including the project coordinator and a representative from the Italian city Assisi (and possibly from Rome), will show a smart tourism and mobility application destined at supporting a better environment.
  • A team from the “We build City” SpeedUpEurope project, composed of the project coordinator and a representative from either the City of Koblenz or the City of Salzburg, will showcase an Open and 3D City Development Platform for Urban Planning.

This shall prove to be a great opportunity for the teams involved to demonstrate their applications and the FIWARE platform, and more globally to promote the overall FIWARE concept, architecture and ecosystem in the USA and beyond.
