The FIWARE4Cities Ed. 5 is out, now with 145 cities deep-dives

We are more than excited to share the extraordinary news about the launch of the new edition of FIWARE’s book FIWARE4Cities. This book is the first of its kind collection of cities from around the world that use solutions based on open standards technologies and often open data to make the cities and territories smarter and more resilient, and create additional benefits from new digital solutions that were not possible before. The fifth edition was presented at one of the leading open source conferences of the year: FIWARE Global Summit, which has just concluded its 9th edition in Vienna. For this occasion, FIWARE decided to present for the very first time the 5th edition of this globally appreciated book. It provides valuable insights into the role of FIWARE in building smart cities and featuring successful implementations and case studies.

This time, FIWARE4Cities lists more than 350 Smart Cities from all over the world and deep-dives into 145 of them with more than 155 solutions that help cities on the journey towards a smart future. All city references work with FIWARE technologies based on open data and open standards in the meantime in over 30 countries worldwide.

This new edition not only presents an unprecedented insight of cities into how they are using FIWARE and how they are realising their objectives and required benefits, but it gives insights into how adoption can work across a country and how cities start sharing their solutions with others.

What new FIWARE4Cities edition 5 is bringing?

  • 20 new cities, among them Aarhus (Denmark), Albertslund (Denmark), Bruges (Belgium), Castilla-La Mancha (Spain), Dormagen (Germany), Manizales (Colombia), Provincial Council of Pontevedra (Spain), Roeselare (Belgium);
  • 10 new cities from India – Bengalavi, Coimbatore, Dahod, Dharamshala, Gandhinagar, Pimpri Chinchwad, Rajkot, Shimla, Srinagar, Visakhapatnam;
  • New concept of Smart Territories with Paris Airport and Port of Seville;
  • Cities with several solutions entrusted in FIWARE: Leuven, Montevideo;
  • Absolutely new countries are included, e.g. Denmark; First living lab DOLL in Denmark based on FIWARE.

This book is not just another book, though. It is a special combination of hands-on information and best practices, real and running implementations, insights by thought leaders and specific trend statements, and last but not least a unique city index that allows you in an interactive mode to easily find the city you are interested in. This book is also special as it lays out the first open source city use cases and solutions that can be shared. Selected cities have started giving open access to their specific Smart City solutions allowing other cities to reuse already existing solutions and avoid inventing the wheel another time (e.g., by sharing publicly their projects on Github) or inviting them for co-creation (e.g., in wider regions seeing cities working together on regional solutions sharing knowhow and resources).

Most of the described solutions and platforms can additionally be found in FIWARE Marketplace which helps its users and their customers find the best innovative and open-source-based products and services. FIWARE Marketplace allows you to get easily informed and updated about further FIWARE-based products and solutions and find the right contact persons if you want to get in contact with one of the 200+ providers.
