A Global Leap Forward: Welcoming New Members and Partners
Our community is stronger than ever, thanks to the addition of 55 new members and partnerships! This year, we welcomed 45 dynamic new members from around the globe. These new members bring extensive expertise in areas such as AI, data spaces, and data management, among others. Their fresh ideas and energy are set to propel our ecosystem to new heights. We were also excited to announce 10 new strategic partnerships, which mark a significant milestone in achieving our shared goals. FIWARE iHubs
The FIWARE iHubs Network Experienced Remarkable Growth
In 2024, the FIWARE iHubs network saw significant growth. We recently welcomed 7 new iHubs from Spain, Brazil, Ukraine, Norway, Argentina, and Finland to our global ecosystem, and this expansion brings the total number of FIWARE iHubs to 46 across 23 countries, promoting technological innovation and digital transformation worldwide. The global FIWARE iHubs network connects iHubs with a vibrant community of innovators, experts, and business leaders, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration. This extensive network greatly enhances the visibility of iHubs and their affiliated businesses, enabling them to access a global market, establish strategic partnerships, and broaden their opportunities.
Data Spaces
Shaping the Future of Data Spaces
FIWARE continues to lead the way in data spaces, promoting secure data sharing through scalable and interoperable solutions. The open source FIWARE Data Space Connector integrates seamlessly with Gaia-X Digital Clearing Houses, supports data product publication in the DOME Marketplace, and implements protocols like IDSA to enhance trust and collaboration. A notable example of the potential for creating data spaces at a national level is the initiative by the Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation, which aims to develop sectoral data spaces with an investment of 500 million euros. FIWARE Impact Stories
Inspiring Stories of Innovation and Positive Impact from the FIWARE Community
This year, we were deeply inspired by several stories that showcased the tangible, real-world impact of our work. Here are some notable examples: In Etteln, Germany, the FIWARE-based Digital Village Twin won the IEEE Smart Cities Contest. A key project in Etteln is DiDoZ, which aims to eliminate data silos by unifying village data on the FIWARE framework. Additionally, FIWARE member Sensative won a contract to deliver smart city services in the Västra Götaland region of Sweden, using its Yggio IoT platform based on FIWARE open source solutions. Lastly, the IoT Agent OPC UA empowers industries to efficiently collect, process, and act upon data from operational technology, enhancing decision-making, predictive maintenance, and industrial process optimization. FUNDED PROJECTS
Driving Innovation: Collaborative Projects Across Europe in 2024
This year, FIWARE Foundation participated in over 25 research and innovation projects, focusing on developing or integrating open source technologies and bringing exciting ideas to life. The technology areas of these projects range from context and data management to security and interaction with third-party systems, with most projects involving Smart Data Models. Additionally, several projects are focused on developing or offering guidance to support the deployment of data spaces, empowering AI solutions. While many of these projects are cross-domain, some pilot solutions specifically target smart cities and communities, while others explore areas such as water, energy, and industry. These collaborative projects, which include significant advancements and strong partnerships, demonstrate our commitment to creating a better future through research and innovation.
Tech Updates
FIWARE Releases in Review
This year, all context brokers have continued to make regular releases. The NGSI-LD brokers, like Scorpio and Stellio, are aligning with the 1.8.1 ETSI specification, adding features such as JsonProperties, VocabProperties, and linked entity retrieval. Orion-LD has also introduced an experimental native DDS binding for robotics. For NGSI-v2, the Orion broker pioneered additional operations, such as transient entities and JEXL operators, facilitating a consistent update of the context. Ongoing updates are being made to the security components of the FIWARE Data Space connector suite. For example, the base API-Gateway now in use is APISIX, featuring an OPA plugin for ORDL policies. Lastly, regular updates to the Business Ecosystem also support data space monetization through TMForum APIs.

The FIWARE Showcase continues to grow, featuring over 15 new entries this year that range from innovative solutions to support services. Many of these entries focus on centralized management, providing real-time data insights, and enhancing decision-making processes. 167 City References and 176 Deep-dives in the “FIWARE4Cities” Smart Cities Book
In 2024, the transformation of cities into smart cities has made significant progress. More than 400 cities across at least 35 countries are utilizing FIWARE technologies, and their global impact continues to grow daily. This year’s edition of “FIWARE4Cities” features 167 cities from 26 different countries around the world. The book highlights 176 solutions that enable cities to become more innovative and resilient. This impressive portfolio demonstrates what can be achieved through open data and open standards based on FIWARE technology. As the global landscape evolves, FIWARE’s open technologies remain crucial in shaping the cities of tomorrow, ensuring they are adaptive, inclusive, and sustainable.

The 10th anniversary of the FIWARE Global Summit was a memorable milestone. Under the patronage of the Municipality of Naples (Italy) and our Platinum Member Meditech, the Summit gathered over 400 attendees and 120 speakers from around the world. It served as a hub for insightful conversations, meaningful connections, and bold ideas focused on shaping the digital future. The packed agenda featured 20 sessions, 5 focused tracks, 9 dynamic panel discussions, 55 thought-provoking presentations, and an immersive two-day tech track. Data Spaces Symposium: Joining Europe’s Leading Event on Data Spaces
The Data Spaces Symposium 2024 wrapped up in March, leaving a lasting impact. Supported by the Data Spaces Business Alliance and with nearly 900 attendees from across the globe, this event not only met but exceeded expectations, serving as a dynamic platform to delve into cutting-edge technologies like digital twin and encourage collaboration. It provided a productive environment for exchanging ideas, insights, and networking opportunities focused on the integration of technologies in data spaces. The Data Spaces Support Centre played an essential role in sharing knowledge and laying a strong foundation for future partnerships among a wide array of stakeholders, including those from the public sector and the business community.
